Currently, Chung Shih has recently completed a PhD in Composition as a Presidential Fellow at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York under the guidance of David Felder, Birge-Cary Professor of Composition. For two years, he has studied computer music with Cort Lippe and Richard Dudas at the Lejaren Hiller Computer Music Studios. In addition, he attended masterclasses and lectures at various summer courses and festivals given by composers such as Simon Bainbridge, Christopher Rouse, Brian Ferneyhough, Philippe Manoury, Jonathan Harvey, John Harbison, Bernard Rands, Alvin Lucier, Chen Yi and Paul Lansky. His recent direction in composition can be described as an exploration of a double intersection: one between the avant-garde and the experimental, and the other between contemporary international and Chinese cultures. This last interest started with his study of the ancient Chinese qin music in 1997 which led quickly to in-depth study of the Chinese literati culture which includes brush painting, philosophy and garden design.
