Biography
Hoh Chung Shih is a Singaporean composer, guqin performer, researcher and educator whose practice explores how sound, bodily movement, space and human interaction shape musical experience. His work encompasses orchestral, chamber and vocal music, electronic sound and interdisciplinary performance. Across these forms, he investigates how musical materials, notation and the actions of performers give rise to different ways of making and experiencing music.
Described by Singapore Unbound as “a leading light of Singapore’s classical music scene,” Hoh has received critical recognition for both his compositional invention and the character of his music. Chang Tou Liang praised the “ingenious treatment” of vocal material in Birth and Death in The Straits Times, and described the orchestral work Mountain Bright as “minimalistic but strangely hypnotic” in Pianomania.
His music has been performed in Asia, Europe and the Americas by musicians and ensembles including EXAUDI, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Ensemble Mosaik, Ensemble Reconsil, the SYC Ensemble Singers and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. His work has featured at festivals including Music at the Anthology, June in Buffalo, Osterfestival Tirol, the Asian Composers League festivals, AngelicA in Bologna and Festival Puente in Chile.
His sustained engagement with guqin brings performance and scholarship into dialogue with composition. His research considers touch, notation, musical time and the changing identities of works in performance. These concerns also inform collaborations across instrumental traditions and artistic disciplines, and projects that invite performers and audiences to participate in shaping a musical experience.
Hoh graduated from King’s College London with First Class Honours in Composition and Analysis and completed his PhD in Composition at the University at Buffalo. He studied composition with David Lumsdaine and David Felder, computer music with Cort Lippe and Richard Dudas, and guqin with Ji Zhiqun.
His work as an educator includes teaching, mentoring, curriculum development, workshops and lecture-demonstrations. He has held teaching appointments at the University of Redlands and in the University at Buffalo–Singapore Institute of Management programme, and served in music and aesthetics leadership roles at Raffles Institution. He has served as President of the Composers Society of Singapore since 2016.

Singapore Unbound 曾称他为“新加坡古典音乐界的引领者之一”。他的创作构思与音乐特质亦受到评论界关注：乐评人 Chang Tou Liang 在《海峡时报》评论 Birth and Death 时，赞赏其对声乐材料的“巧妙处理”；在 Pianomania 评论管弦乐作品 Mountain Bright 时，则形容其“简约，却有一种奇异的催眠般的魅力”。
