Teaching

Teaching is an extension of my practice as a composer, performer and researcher. I teach composition and guqin performance, helping students connect listening, technique and artistic inquiry. My aim is to support each student in developing the skills, judgement and curiosity needed to pursue meaningful musical questions.

In composition, lessons may involve close listening, score study, practical exercises, experimentation and discussion of works in progress. Attention to materials and technique develops alongside questions of form, notation, performance and artistic intention.

In guqin, teaching connects bodily coordination and touch with listening, phrasing and musical understanding. The study of repertoire and notation provides a way to explore how movements, sounds and intentions come together in performance.

My educational work also includes workshops, lectures and lecture-demonstrations for students, musicians and wider audiences. Topics draw on contemporary composition, guqin practice, notation, collaboration and the relationships between artistic practice and research.

My teaching experience includes appointments at the University of Redlands and in the University at Buffalo–Singapore Institute of Management programme, as well as music and aesthetics leadership roles at Raffles Institution. I have also contributed to curriculum development, composition mentoring and educational programmes in Singapore and internationally.

Learning

I studied at King's College London as a Singapore Public Service Commission overseas music scholar, graduating with First Class Honours in Composition and Analysis. My teachers included David Lumsdaine in composition, and Arnold Whittall, Silvina Milstein and Christopher Wintle in analysis.

I subsequently completed a PhD in Composition at the University at Buffalo as a Presidential Fellow, studying primarily with David Felder. I also studied computer music with Cort Lippe and Richard Dudas, alongside studies in music theory, musicology, Chinese philosophy and Chinese art. My guqin studies began with Ji Zhiqun in Singapore.

教学

教学是我作为作曲家、演奏者与研究者的实践延伸。我教授作曲与古琴演奏，帮助学生把聆听、技法与艺术探索联系起来。我希望支持每位学生发展所需的能力、判断力与好奇心，进而探索对自己有意义的音乐问题。

作曲教学可包括细致聆听、乐谱研读、实践练习、实验，以及对创作中作品的讨论。对材料与技法的掌握，与对形式、记谱、演奏及创作意图的思考同步发展。

古琴教学把身体协调与触弦方式，同聆听、乐句及音乐理解联系起来。通过曲目与琴谱的学习，探索动作、声音与意念如何在演奏中相互贯通。

我的教育工作也包括面向学生、音乐工作者及公众的工作坊、讲座与示范讲演，内容涉及当代作曲、古琴实践、记谱、合作创作，以及艺术实践与研究之间的关系。

我的教学经历包括美国雷德兰兹大学、布法罗大学与新加坡管理学院的合作课程，以及莱佛士书院的音乐与美育教学领导工作。我亦参与新加坡及海外的课程发展、作曲指导与音乐教育项目。

我曾获新加坡公共服务委员会海外音乐奖学金，赴伦敦国王学院学习，并以作曲与分析一级荣誉成绩毕业。期间随 David Lumsdaine 学习作曲，随 Arnold Whittall、Silvina Milstein 及 Christopher Wintle 学习音乐分析。

此后，我以 Presidential Fellow 身份于纽约州立大学布法罗分校完成作曲博士学位，主要师从 David Felder，并随 Cort Lippe 及 Richard Dudas 学习电脑音乐。期间亦研习音乐理论、音乐学、中国哲学与中国艺术。我的古琴学习始于新加坡，师从纪志群。
