Five Songs for Thich Nhat Hanh · for mixed choir · 2004 · ca. 10 minutes
Two characters, birth and death, make a whole poem; each singer treads their own path, like the Hani rice-planting songs.

Thich Nhat Hanh wrote this poem in 1974, at a conference organised by the World Council of Churches in Sri Lanka. The original is a repetition of only two Chinese characters, 生 (sheng: life, to be born) and 死 (si: death, to die), arranged so that they produce its meaning.
The music is in five movements, from about a minute to about five minutes long. It invites the choir to take part actively within circumscribed musical situations, and the staging can adapt to different spaces. Its ‘free’ polyphony is inspired by the eight-part polyphonic singing of the Hani people of Yunnan, China, whose singers describe it in this way: when one is out walking, each person treads their own path; when transplanting rice seedlings, some arrive earlier and some later — and the songs sound good this way.

During many lifetimes, birth and death are present,
Giving rise to birth and death.
The moment the notion of birth and death arises,
Birth and death are there.
As soon as the notion of birth and death dies,
Real life is born.
