About the work 关于作品
Dances and Dreams I is the nexus around which the other movements resonate. Across the four movements, the two pianists are rarely locked together: each follows a part of their own, and the dance lies in how they give and take.
《Dances and Dreams I》是其他乐章围绕着共振的核心。在四个乐章中，两位钢琴家很少被锁定在一起：各自沿着自己的声部前进，舞蹈就在彼此的给与取之间。
In Dream Slow, four pieces of music, A to D, are laid out on the piano stand from right to left, matching the registers of the piano. Each chord lasts as long as it takes to fade to a soft level agreed beforehand, so the tempo slows from A to D. When one player arrives at a chord still held by the other, they go back and play from an earlier point; after several such collisions, a player switches to another piece of music — sometimes moving round the other pianist to change seats. The movement ends when one player has finished all four, when both together have completed them, or when it seems right to move on.
在《Dream Slow》中，A 至 D 四段音乐由右至左摆在谱架上，对应钢琴的音区。每个和弦持续到声音衰减至事先约定的弱奏程度为止，因此速度从 A 到 D 逐渐放慢。当一位乐手来到另一位仍按着的和弦时，便退回较早的地方重新弹起；如此碰撞数次之后，乐手便换到另一段音乐——有时还得绕过另一位钢琴家换座位。当一位乐手弹完全部四段、两人合起来弹完全部，或感觉是时候进入下一乐章时，这个乐章便结束。
Past Dance is a dance of give and take for two: the players speed up and slow down according to the stretch and difficulty — physical, mental and musical — of spanning each interval, meeting only at the start of each phrase.
《Past Dance》是一支二人之间给与取的舞：乐手依据跨越每个音程时身体、心理与音乐上的伸展与难度而加速、放慢，只在每个乐句的开头会合。
In the Dances and Dreams movements, different voicings of the chords let fragments of recognisable melodies emerge and disappear. Dances and Dreams I closes with a montage of material from the finale of Chopin’s Sonata in B-flat minor.
在《Dances and Dreams》诸乐章中，和弦的不同配置让可辨认的旋律片段时隐时现。《Dances and Dreams I》以肖邦降 b 小调奏鸣曲末乐章的材料剪辑成的蒙太奇作结。
