Based on an original short story by Joel Tan set on Singapore’s MRT East-West Line in 2015, the music emerges from the abstract and emotional aspects of the story, referencing its physical and political contexts and its psychological terrains.
There is no common tempo. Each player moves through their own phrases with extreme rubato, entering in a cued order but finishing when they finish, and responding, echoing and counterpointing the others in real time — so the result differs at every performance. The materials are punchy accented notes, sometimes to the point of distorting the timbre, and sliding notes shaped like Sprechstimme, their pitches points of departure and arrival. Listeners have likened the effect to free jazz.
