About the work 关于作品

Mountain Bright places music alongside a poem whose words recur in changing arrangements. Images of mountains, brightness, darkness, lines, shadows and singing take on different relationships as their order shifts. The poem offers a parallel to the musical reconfiguration of pitches among instruments: familiar elements return in altered constellations.

《Mountain Bright》

How it is played

Seating plan for Mountain Bright
Seating plan: three ensembles, which may be repositioned so that the sound mass surrounds the audience.

The players form three ensembles: winds (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet), strings (two violins, viola, cello), and a third group of vibraphone and timpani, piano, double bass and trombone. Each can be repositioned to explore the acoustics of a venue; ideally the sound mass should surround and overwhelm the audience.

Dynamics and timbre are the main subjects of the work, and they are bound together. Winds and strings pulse freely on single notes — an affective recitative on one pitch — bending them microtonally, while the third group shimmers in tremolos. ppp sits at the fragile boundary of sound and silence, fff at the boundary of good tone and noise. Where dynamics swing quickly from extreme to extreme, pitch accuracy gives way to the full change of sound: ‘Do not be afraid of an ugly or poor tone; the range and variety beyond the classical norms are highly desirable.’
